San Francesco d'Assisi

Conosciuto come il "poverello di Assisi", tutti sappiamo la storia di San Francesco, fondatore dell'ordine francescano che assieme a Santa Caterina da Siena sono i Patroni d'Italia. Nell'iconografia cristiana viene raffigurato con gli uccellini, in estasi, mentre dona i beni materiali ai poveri, ma non dimentichiamo le storie della vita di San Francesco nella Basilica Superiore d'Assisi in cui vengono affrescati i momenti della vita del Santo come "la predica agli uccelli", "il miracolo alla fonte", "l'estasi", "le stimmate" e via discorrendo. Amava la natura, le sue creature e perciò il creato che è tutto di Dio.
David che nella sua vita di artista ha sempre cercato di trasformare la realtà oggettiva con la sua fantasia e poesia, quando affronta il tema sacro si ferma e si riconcilia. La realtà diventa verità. Nel dipinto il Santo è raffigurato frontalmente con la veste francescana e il cappuccio sulla testa. Tiene nella mano sinistra un bastone di legno, che simboleggia la povertà. Sulle mani e all'altezza delle braccia, ci sono i passerotti ai quali predicava: "Andando il beato Francesco verso Bevagna, predicò a molti uccelli; e quelli esultanti stendevano i colli, protendevano le ali, aprivano i becchi, gli toccavano la tunica; e tutto ciò vedevano i compagni in attesa di lui sulla via."
Il volto del Santo è leggermente volto a sinistra, il soave incarnato della pelle è sostituito da macchie di colore sovrapposte, di origine post-impressionista, come se fosse deturpato, consumato dai digiuni e dalle penitenze. Ma nel povero vi è Cristo.
La netta distinzione dei colori blu e glauco, fanno da sfondo alla figura che viene risaltata nella sua semplicità e nella sua umiltà.
Known as the "poor man of Assisi", we all know the story of San Francesco, founder of the Franciscan order whom together with Santa Caterina da Siena are the Patron Saints of Italy. In Christian iconography he is depicted with birds, in ecstasy, while giving material goods to the poor. However, let us not forget the stories of the life of Saint Francis in the Upper Basilica of Assisi. There are frescoes such as "The Preaching Of The Birds", "The Miracle At The Source", "The Ecstasy", The Stigmata" and so on. He loved nature, its creatures and therefore all creations belonging to God.
David in his life, as an artist has always tried to transform objective reality through imagination and poetry, when describing a sacred theme, he stops to reconcile. Reality becomes truth. The Saint is painted frontally with the Franciscan Robe and a hood on his head. In his left hand he holds a wooden stick, which symbolizes poverty. On his hands and at the height of his arms, there are the sparrows, to which he preached: "Blessed Francis went towards Bevagna, he preached to many birds; and they, exultantly, stretched out their necks, stretched out their wings, opened their beaks, touching his tunic; and all this was seen by his campanions.”
The Saint’s face is slightly turned to the left, the soft complexion of his skin is replaced by overlapped spots, appearing disfigured, overwhelmed from fasting and penance. But in the poor there is Christ.
The distinction between the blue and the grey greenish colors form the background of the figure which highlightes simplicity and humbleness.
